Hyun Ju Kim

“My name is Hyun Ju Kim and I was born in South Korea. Yes, I’m Korean but my spirit spreads through the entire world. I love to live in this world but not only in one place!

In 2006 I went to India for an MFA in printmaking at Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan. This followed my undergraduate studies in painting at Dankook University in Korea in 2005. After graduating in 2009 I exhibited works in England, Greece, India, Korea, Egypt, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia and Pakistan. Currently I live and work in Melbourne Australia.

My works have changed at each stage of my life reflecting the many emotions I face along the way. Being exposed to different cultures and religions inspire me as I call myself not just an artist but a traveller too.

My works are inspired by nature, culture, religion and people and come from the many drawings I make of nature, people, animals and places where people live, belong, and pray. I believe humans belong to nature which makes me have a close relationship with nature. It lets me travel and explore the world and then I can see more of it in different lives and states and forms.

Especially sometimes even though I can’t converse in different languages, people taught me how important it is that we can feel, understand and live together through the invisible language which is the language of nature. That’s my most important inspiration.

Though my journeys I draw different images and combine them with my imagination which makes way for a new place which is my dream world. The drawings from real life consisting of places, people and events lead to the final pieces which combine everything in the final print.”
