Kate Piekutowski is an Australian/Polish artist who works as a printmaker and textile designer. Born in Hobart, Tasmania, Piekutowski finished her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2011 from the University of Tasmania and later completed her Masters of Fine Arts (June 2013). She has exhibited in over 50 solo and group exhibitions in Gallery Pejean, Colville Gallery, Inka Gallery, Moonah Art Centre, The Stable Gallery, Manyung Gallery, Goulburn Street Gallery, Sidespace Gallery, BSG Gallery, The Long Gallery as well as attending a number of artist fairs in Hong Kong, Singapore and New York.
Through the medium of etching, Piekutowski explores cultural identity and a sense of belonging within her practice. She reflects on the disconnection with her Polish heritage and ancestors, as well as investigates historical and folkloric narratives. Being a first-generation child of migrants, her work naturally triggers a sense of nostalgia, loss and memories of a romanticised world. She draws inspiration from childhood stories including Mary Poppins and The Wizard of Oz, where motifs such as an umbrella or ruby shoes are symbolic of returning home.
